Mayan Man
Passion in what you do must be the key to happiness… This Mayan man has dedicated his whole life to the “green gold” of the Yucatan, a kin to the blue agave, this plant is as eccentric as its gardner. It can not be harvested the first 7 years of its life, it then can only have 3 leaves harvested at a time, then at 25 it grows a long tall single branch that flowers and if they don’t cut it down the flowers will fall and kill the plants around it. Our passionate Mayan man has spent a life time caring for and growing this crop… when the Hacienda closed I think it just about broke his heart… He kept his tiny share crop growing the love of his life, and when the Hacienda was bought and restored as a living museum…The fruit of Don Antonio’s (Mayan Man) labor is seen…being a first hand account of working on a Hacienda since the age of 15 (since 1940 something) but now he gets to enjoy seeing the love of his life grown on the soil he toiled and impart his stories to all of us to take and share with the world.
